The representatives of «Siemens-Medicine» LLC, who are stakeholders of the master’s degree program «Specialized computer systems» (SCS), Computer Engineering major, held the event. The participants of the open workshop «Using CAN and CAN-Open interfaces in specialized computer systems on the example of medical equipment» were mostly fourth-year undergraduate and first-year master’s students who are majoring in Computer Engineering and are interested in achieving competencies in the development and testing of distributed control systems operating in real time (automotive equipment, medical equipment, robotics, etc.).

The workshop consisted of theoretical and practical parts. Within the framework of the theoretical part, Roman Fedoriak, head of the Software and Hardware Development Group, Siemens-Medicine LLC, familiarized those present with the capabilities and peculiarities of the CAN family interfaces, conducted their comparative analysis with other serial interfaces of similar functional purpose, presented a model of interaction of open systems in automatic control systems based on the interfaces of the CAN family, and also talked about the available services provided by the CAN-Open protocol. The practical part was carried out on the basis of the equipment of the GlobalLogic embedded research laboratory using specialized interface adapters provided by Siemens-Medicine LLC. It was conducted by engineer Viktor Timkov together with Software Development Engineers Andrii Slavytiak and Oleksandr Tashno, who, by the way, are graduates of the master’s degree program «Specialized computer systems» at Lviv Polytechnic. The participants of the workshop programmed and debugged microcontrollers in the mode of communication with peripheral modules with a working CAN interface and in general acquired basic skills of working with this interface, met potential employers, learned about vacancies and requirements for job candidates.

We are grateful to Romanov Fedoriak, Viktor Timkov, Andriy Slavytiak and Oleksandr Tashno, employees of Siemens-Medicine LLC, who proposed actual changes to the educational materials and content of the educational program, emphasized Roman Kochan, head of the Department of Specialized Computer Systems.

The content of the discipline «Research and Design of Peripheral Devices Controllers», which is read in the first year of the master’s educational program of the SCS, will be supplemented basing on the results of the workshop.
