Until 1993, the Lviv Polytechnic conducted the training of engineers in Automatic Telecommunications in the corresponding department. In 1993 the Automatic Telecommunications Department was eliminated and instead of it the Telecommunications Department was formed. Telecommunications Department was completing the training and engineers turn out in speciality “Automatic Telecommunications” until 1995. In the 1993/94 academic year, the Ministry of Education gave the permission for training students at the basic course 6.0924 Telecommunications. The first academic group of 25 persons in this field was formed from the first-year students, who studed the course 6.0907 Radio Engineering and learned from the second year. In 1996, specified course and speciality 7.092406 Networks were licensed. Licensed number is 80.
During 1993-1998 the Department carried out the considerable organizational and methodological work for setting educational process in the course 6.0924 “Telecommunications” and preparing for the students training in specialty 7.092406 “Connection Networks”. The new material and technical base was created, necessary educational-methodological materials were prepared, human resourses potential was formed and prerequisites for the development of the research work were layed.
Since the establishment of the Department and till 2010 the head of the Department had been the Ph. D., Associate proffesor Pavlykevych M. Since 2010 the head of the Department has been the Sc. D., Professor Klymasz Mikhail.
In October 2001, the Telecommunications Department became part of a new structural unit — Institute of Telecommunications, Radioelectronics and Electronic Engineering.
The Telecommunications Department is in a close professional relationship with kindred subdivisions of the leading technic educational and scientific establishments of Ukraine and abroad, in particular with the A. S. Popov Odessa national Academy of communications, Kharkiv National University of Radioelectronics (KNURE), the National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, the State University of Information and Communication Technologies, the Vienna University of Technology, the Warsaw University of Technology and the Dresden University of Technology.
Six educational laboratories are currently operating at the Department which are equipped with the modern telecommunicational and informational devises and systems, therefore the research laboratories NDL-109 are successfully running in the Department structure and the local academy CISCO; the equipment for educational purposes was placed in the laboratory of “Ruling complexes of TC-systems” and the certification of the experts according to the program СISСО ССNА (network system administrators) is also organized.
