Stepan (Stephan) Banah

30.03.1892 - 31.08.1945

Banah Stepan, son of Grecheka Stepana, lodger of Krakow's starostwo (30 march 1892 - 31 august 1945). Was born in Krakow, polak. After graduating Krakow gymnasia in 1910 1910 y. entered on engines bilding faculty of Lviv polytechnic school. In 1911 y. translated on ingenery faculty for speciality "Land ingenery", where brought off fourth last (1913-1914) sparring year. From 1920 to 1922 yy. worked as assistant on mathematics chair Lviv Polytechnic under managing of professor A. Lomyckyj. Published a row of scientific labour.
In
1920 y. won a learned philosophy doctor degree, and in 1924 y. was learned by rote in learned rank of extraordinary mathematics chair professor of Львівського university and select by as member-correspondent of Polish Academy of Science. In 1927 y. stood by usual professor. One of sculptors of contemporary functional analysis, together with G. Shtejngauz in 1929 y. organize an edition of famous magazine "Studia mathematica". Linear spaces studed by him obtained a name "Banah space"; count for much for contemporary mathematics. Together with his pupils - S. Mazur, V. Orlych, V. Shauder hi stood one of founders (afterwards - from by world acknowledgement) of Lviv mathematical school, in which developed considerable part of functional analysis. Any amount of his results stood classic and enter to textbooks and monographs from functional analysis. Some works bear upon theory of usual differential dressings (Banah middle), to functions theory complex variable and oth. Basic works (specifically "Theory of linear operators", "Differential and integral calculation") published in Polish, French and Ukrainian.
From
1939 y. is Head of Polish mathematical society, correspondending member of USSR Academy of Science, laureate of big award of Polish Academy of Sciece. Worked as dean of фізико-mathematical faculty of Львівського university and for hours together was in leading work in USSR Academy of science Institute (Lviv branch office).
Under time of german occupation at first hid, and then - anywhere perhaps to live out - entered to Vejgl antityphus Institute, where a brought fame mathematician used as object of risky and medical experiments humiliating for human dignity. Into
1944 y. on Lviv State University faculty: also managed by chair of theoretical mechanics of Lviv Politechik Institute.
His openings stood by golden XX mathematics fund. Polish mathematical society laid the foundation of award by S. Banah.
Buried on Lychakivskomu churchyard.
